The first 14 weeks of pregnancy is the most important trimester because this is when the vital structures of your baby are developing. The embryo develops all of its organs and grows to about 1.5 inches. The heart, brain, lungs, eyes, arms, and legs have formed, however, not all of structures are fully functional. The placenta and umbilical cord are also formed during this time.
Regular appointments with your health care provider throughout your pregnancy are important to ensure the health of you and your baby. In addition to medical care, prenatal care includes education on pregnancy and childbirth, plus counseling and support. Frequent visits with your health care provider allow you to follow the progress of your baby’s development. These visits will also give you the opportunity to ask questions.

Generally, recommended follow-up visits are every four weeks until 28 weeks. If you have risk factors that is affecting your pregnancy, your follow-up visits will be sooner than 4 weeks.
